When a Cypres cutter is mounted at the base of the reserve container, as in a Javelin or Racer, sometimes while manipulating the canopy into position, it is possible to wrap the closing loop around the cutter. In this case you can see that the cutter is turned at 90 degrees to the grommet, and the closing loop passes around, and underneath, the cutter. |

looking down at the loop you can see where it has been pressed against the grommet and some fraying has occurred from (I suspect) the bag's grommet.

In the case of a Javelin (which this was), Sunpath advise a closing loop length 2 1/8th inches when a Cypres is installed. If the loop passes around the cutter it will become obvious when you try to compress the pilot chute that something is wrong, in this instance, the loop is 1.5 inches longer than the length recommended by Sun Path, so the misrouting was missed. You can also see signs of compression and fraying near the washer. |

Comments: (if you would like to comment on this article, email me my 2 cents ) Sunpath told me that table tests of this scenario showed a possibility of some slight delaying of the pilot chute launching in the event of a Cypres fire. |
